Seasonal Celebrations

Long before the shop displays and the tinsel, the turning year was marked with fire, feasting and a healthy respect for whatever might be lurking in the dark. Our Seasonal Celebrations collection brings those older traditions back to the festivities, with designs for Halloween, Christmas and Easter that are part folklore, part mischief and entirely Valegrim.

Halloween began as Samhain, the Celtic festival marking summer's end, when the boundary between this world and the next was thought to wear thin. In Scotland and Ireland, children went "guising" in disguise from house to house, carrying lanterns carved from turnips long before pumpkins took over. Expect witches, ravens, cauldrons and things that go bump in the night.

Christmas carries echoes of Yule, the midwinter festival of the old Germanic peoples, alongside the Victorian traditions we still keep today. The first commercial Christmas card went on sale in London in 1843. Our winter designs lean into the colder, stranger side of the season: frost-bitten gnomes, snowbound witches and cosy creatures sheltering from the cold.

Easter arrives with the return of the light. According to the 8th-century monk Bede, its English name comes from Ēostre, a spring goddess honoured in April, and the season has gathered hares, eggs and hot cross buns ever since. Look out for spring designs arriving as the days grow longer.
