Here Kitty Kitty: Witch and Black Cat Halloween T-Shirt

She's calling sweetly. The cat isn't buying it. Under a huge orange harvest moon, a grinning old witch stretches out one long, clawed hand and coos Here Kitty Kitty, while the black cat in front of her arches its back, bares every fang and glares back with burning red eyes. Grinning jack-o'-lanterns, skulls and a flickering lantern crowd the leaf-strewn ground, and bats wheel overhead. The folklore behind the design

Few animals have had a stranger reputation than the black cat. In 1233 a papal document known as Vox in Rama described heretics worshipping a black cat, and over the following centuries black cats became tied, unfairly, to witchcraft and the Devil.

In Britain, though, the story is more mixed. Here a black cat crossing your path has long been thought lucky, the opposite of American superstition, and sailors' wives were said to keep black cats at home to ensure their husbands' safe return. In the Scottish Highlands, folklore told of the Cat Sìth, a huge black fairy cat with a single white spot on its chest. At Samhain, the festival that became Halloween, families would leave out a saucer of milk to win its favour, because a household that didn't might find its cows running dry.

So when a witch calls "here, kitty kitty" on Halloween night, the only sensible response is the one this cat is giving.
