HAHAHAHA: Cackling Witch Blood Moon Halloween T-Shirt

You'll hear her before you see her. Tattered robes streaming behind her, hair wild in the wind and fangs bared in a gleeful scream, this ancient witch tears across the face of a blood-red moon on her broomstick. The folklore behind the design

The image of a witch riding a broomstick is older than you might think. The earliest known picture appears in the margin of a 1451 French manuscript, Martin Le Franc's Le Champion des Dames. It shows two women flying through the air, one on a broom and one on a stick, labelled as members of a heretical sect. Over the following centuries, as witch-hunting spread across Europe, the flying witch became a fixture of sermons, pamphlets and trial confessions, and eventually of every Halloween since.

The blood-red moon has its own long history as an omen. A total lunar eclipse turns the moon a deep copper red, because the only sunlight reaching it has been bent and filtered through Earth's atmosphere, like every sunset on the planet at once. For most of history that science was unknown, and a red moon was read as a warning of war, plague or darker things abroad in the night. On a night like this, you'd be right to worry.
