To lost travelers, the Yuki-onna is beautiful enough to stop them mid-step — which is exactly the danger. Get close enough, and her breath is said to freeze the air itself, leaving the unlucky frozen where they stood.

Not every telling ends there. One of the most repeated versions of her story has her sparing a young man's life on the condition that he never speak of what he saw — only for him to marry a mysterious, pale-skinned woman years later, who turns out, when he finally breaks his silence, to be the very spirit who let him live. It's one of the more bittersweet entries in Japanese ghost lore, equal parts warning and quiet tragedy.
