Trick or Treat: Grim Reaper Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween T-Shirt

Knock knock. The door creaks open, and there he is: hooded, grinning and holding out a carved jack-o'-lantern in one bony hand while the other reaches towards you, claws first. Behind him a haunted house stands dark against the full moon, and bats flit through the night. The question is the oldest one in Halloween: Trick or Treat? Choose carefully. It's a bold, one-colour vintage horror illustration in cream on black, with the stark, hand-inked look of an old horror comic or gig poster.

The folklore behind the design

Long before trick-or-treating, Britain and Ireland had their own door-to-door traditions at the end of October. In England, "souling" saw the poor go from house to house around All Souls' Day, offering prayers for the dead in return for small spiced soul cakes. In Scotland and Ireland, children went "guising": they dressed up in disguise and had to perform something for their treat, whether a song, a poem or a joke. Many Scottish children still do.

The phrase "trick or treat" itself is surprisingly recent. The earliest known printed example comes from Alberta, Canada, in 1927, and the custom spread across North America over the following decades before travelling back across the Atlantic. So the Reaper at your door is part of a very old tradition, even if his catchphrase is only about a hundred years old.
