On January 8, 1981, a farmer in Trans-en-Provence, France, reported witnessing a disc-shaped craft descend into a terraced field on his property, remain briefly on the ground, and then depart, leaving behind a distinct circular mark scorched into the soil. What sets this case apart from nearly every other UFO sighting on record is what happened next: French investigators from GEPAN, a government agency specifically established to study aerial phenomena, conducted a formal scientific analysis of the site.

Soil samples taken from the landing mark showed measurable physical changes, including altered mechanical resistance and chlorophyll deficiencies in nearby vegetation, consistent with exposure to significant heat and pressure applied in a very short timeframe. The investigators' own report concluded the physical evidence was consistent with the witness's account and could not be explained by any known cause. It remains one of the very few UFO cases in the world with a formal government scientific investigation and genuine physical evidence attached to it.
