A search party, including several adults and a local National Guardsman, went to investigate with flashlights, expecting little more than a crashed meteor or downed aircraft. What they reported finding instead was something else entirely: a towering, hooded figure with glowing eyes, hovering just above the ground, giving off an acrid, metallic smell before the group fled in terror.

Witnesses described the creature as ten feet tall, with a spade-shaped head, no visible arms beyond long claw-like hands, and a floating, rather than walking, movement. Some in the group reported feeling ill afterward, with symptoms including nausea and irritated throats, which fed early speculation about toxic gas or ball lightning as a natural explanation. No conclusive account has ever fully satisfied the details reported by every witness, and the Flatwoods Monster remains one of American cryptid folklore's most enduring and specific entities.
