On the night of September 3, 1965, a teenager hitchhiking on a rural road outside Exeter, New Hampshire, reported being followed by a large object with pulsating red lights that dipped silently over nearby farmhouses and trees. Shaken, he flagged down a passing car and was driven to the local police station, where officer Eugene Bertrand, who had encountered something similar earlier that same night, returned with him to the scene. Both witnessed the object rise silently from behind a tree line before moving off into the darkness.

What set Exeter apart from most sightings of the era was the credibility of its witnesses, a police officer and a corroborating civilian account within hours of each other, at a specific, verifiable location. The case drew genuine national attention, prompted an Air Force investigation that closed it as unexplained, and became one of the direct influences behind journalist John Fuller's reporting and the wider public push for a serious UFO study, eventually contributing to the Condon Committee investigation.
