In the early hours of July 24, 1948, Eastern Air Lines pilots Clarence Chiles and John Whitted were flying a DC-3 over Montgomery, Alabama, when a glowing, wingless, cigar-shaped object streaked past them at close range, banking sharply before climbing away into the clouds. Both pilots gave detailed, closely matching accounts immediately after landing, describing a double row of windows along the object's fuselage and a trail of intense blue flame.

It remains one of the earliest credible pilot-witnessed UFO reports on record, made all the more notable by the professional standing of the witnesses and the fact that a passenger aboard the same flight reported seeing a brief flash of light consistent with their account. The U.S. Air Force's Project Sign investigated the case seriously at the time, initially leaning toward genuine unexplained phenomenon before officially settling on a meteor as the most likely, if not fully satisfying, explanation.
