On the night of January 23, 1974, a genuine earthquake shook the Berwyn Mountains in North Wales, registering around 3.5 on the Richter scale, strong enough to be felt across the region. What followed turned a real seismic event into one of Britain's most debated UFO cases: local residents reported a loud bang, a bright light in the sky, and strange lights on the mountainside itself, prompting a search and rescue response and, according to some accounts, sightings of a domed, metallic object partially buried on the slope.

No wreckage was ever officially confirmed, and the most widely accepted explanation ties the lights and tremor together as a natural, if unusually dramatic, coincidence, possibly compounded by a small meteor sighting the same night. But the overlap of a genuine earthquake, credible witness reports, and an official search response has kept the case alive for decades, earning it the nickname "Wales' Roswell" among UFO researchers, and it remains one of the UK's most frequently cited unexplained incidents.
