Stop Looking At Me: Grumpy Winter Gnome and Woodland Animals T-Shirt

He's cold, he's covered in icicles, and he did not ask for an audience. This grumpy old gnome has planted himself in the snow with his arms folded and his lantern lit, and he's made his feelings very clear with a sign: Stop Looking At Me. Unfortunately for him, the whole woodland is doing exactly that. A snowy owl glares from above, a fox peers up from the drifts, a red squirrel perches on his shoulder and a tiny mouse stares from below. It's a detailed, funny winter illustration for anyone who just wants to be left alone, and never is.

The folklore behind the design

In British fairy lore, the little folk hated being watched. The best-known tale is "Fairy Ointment," collected in Joseph Jacobs' English Fairy Tales (1890). A midwife called to a mysterious birth accidentally rubs a fairy ointment in her eye and suddenly sees the fair folk as they really are. Later, at a market, she spots the fairy father stealing and greets him. When he learns which eye can see him, he strikes it blind. The moral is simple: some beings do not like to be looked at.

His woodland companions have their own British stories. The red squirrel, once common across the country, has been pushed back by the grey squirrel since greys were introduced from North America in the 19th century. Today reds survive mainly in Scotland and in strongholds such as Anglesey, the Isle of Wight and Brownsea Island. The snowy owl is a rare visitor from the Arctic. The only confirmed pair to breed in Britain nested on Fetlar in Shetland from 1967 to 1975, and birdwatchers still talk about it.
