If the Oni has a king, it's Shuten-dōji — the most feared and most famous of them all, said to command an entire stronghold of lesser demons from a mountain fortress on Mount Ōe. According to the legend, he and his followers terrorised the region around the old capital, kidnapping and devouring victims, drinking heavily enough that his name literally translates to something like "drunkard boy."

His downfall is one of the most celebrated stories in Japanese folklore. A band of samurai, led by the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu, infiltrated his mountain hideout disguised as traveling monks, got him drunk on poisoned sake, and beheaded him as he slept. Even decapitated, the legend claims his head lunged for one final attack — a detail that's kept the story alive as one of Japan's great monster-slaying epics for a thousand years.

This design goes straight at the source of the legend — a towering, red-skinned demon king with prayer beads and twin curved horns, kanji spelling his name set beside him, rendered with heavier detail and sharper linework than most of the collection to match the weight of the story itself.
