Puddle Patrol: Grumpy Crow in a Raincoat T-Shirt

He's done his rounds, he's soaked to the feathers, and he's not happy about it. This drenched crow has pulled up the hood of his yellow oilskin, planted his talons in the muddiest puddle on the lane, and is giving you a look that says it's all your fault. Puddle Patrol is a bold, dripping illustration for anyone who carries on regardless of the British weather, and scowls the whole time.

The folklore behind the design

Crows have been watching us, and judging us, for a very long time. A group of them has been called "a murder" since at least 1486, when the phrase appeared in The Book of St Albans, a hunting and heraldry manual that listed collective nouns for animals. The name fits their reputation as dark, knowing birds of omen.

That reputation is partly earned. Modern research has found that crows recognise individual human faces, remember people who have wronged them, and even pass that grudge on to other crows. So if this one looks like he's holding something against you, he probably is.

The yellow raincoat is a nod to the classic fisherman's oilskin: cotton waterproofed with linseed oil and dyed bright so it could be seen at sea. It's the uniform of anyone who has had to work outside in proper weather, and it's now keeping one very cross bird dry, more or less.
