By the end of the day, the French army was broken, the flower of its nobility lay dead or captured, and John II himself — "John the Good" — had surrendered on the field. The prince treated his royal prisoner with famous courtesy, and the capture of a reigning King of France sent shockwaves through Europe, forcing France into a decade of crisis and reshaping the balance of the Hundred Years' War.
