Kuchisake-onna is one of Japan's most persistent modern legends, with roots that may stretch back centuries but that exploded into genuine nationwide panic in the late 1970s — schools sending children home early, parents walking kids to class in groups, sightings reported across the country in a wave that felt less like folklore and more like a real threat moving through the population. It's stayed part of the cultural landscape ever since, regularly resurfacing in media and local rumor alike.

This design captures her at the moment just before the question — mask still in place, dark eyes fixed on the viewer, blood already marking the edges of her clothing, plum blossoms and distant pagodas behind her under a heavy red sun.
