Of all Japan's yōkai, the Kappa is probably the one everyone half-knows already — turtle-shelled, beaked, green-skinned, lurking in rivers and ponds with a water-filled dish set into the top of its skull. That dish is the whole key to the creature: spill the water and a Kappa loses its power, sometimes even its life. Bow to one politely, folklore says, and it's honour-bound to bow back — emptying its own dish in the process.

Beneath the odd charm, older Kappa stories carry a real warning. They were used for generations to teach children caution around rivers and lakes, blamed for drownings, and credited with dragging people and livestock underwater. But they're not purely malicious — Kappa are famously obsessed with cucumbers, occasionally strike bargains, and in some tales even repay a kindness with genuine loyalty. Rarely purely good or purely evil, which is part of why they've endured so well.

This design catches one waist-deep in a misty river, cucumber in hand, water dish balanced on its head, waterfall and mountains behind it under a heavy red sun. Slightly more colour and character detail than some of the collection's starker pieces, closer to a creature portrait than a ghost story.
