The folklore behind the design

"Fighting like cat and dog" has described a stormy relationship in English since at least the 1600s. Anyone who has lived with both knows the truth is more complicated. Many cats and dogs raised together end up firm friends, and in cold weather even rivals see the sense in sharing body heat.

That idea sits behind the old expression a "three-dog night": a night so cold you'd need three dogs in the bed to keep warm. Its exact origin is disputed, but the meaning has never needed explaining to anyone who has woken up with a dog on their feet in January. The red check blanket is a nod to tartan, which was once a practical everyday cloth for keeping warm in the Scottish Highlands long before it became a fashion.
