Some yōkai are born from objects, some from emotion, some from mischief. The Gashadokuro is born from grief — and from bone. Folklore holds that when enough people die without proper burial, from famine, plague, or battle, their bones fuse together in the earth and rise as one massive skeletal giant, many times the height of a man, wandering the countryside after dark.

It doesn't hunt quietly. The name itself comes from the rattling, grinding sound its bones make as it moves — "gasha gasha." Older accounts give one piece of practical folk wisdom: if you hear a ringing in your ears at night with no source, the Gashadokuro is near, and it's already too late to run.

This design leans into the scale and dread the stories describe — a skull looming over a red battlefield sun, clawed hand reaching toward the ground, a line of samurai and a pagoda dwarfed beneath its ribcage. Rendered in heavier ink-wash strokes than the rest of the collection, with red official-style stamps flanking the kanji title, for a slightly more weathered, battle-scroll feel.
