By day, she looks like any other woman — composed, quiet, eating almost nothing at all. It's the second mouth, hidden beneath her hair at the back of her skull, that gives her away. The Futakuchi-onna's hidden mouth is always hungry, and it isn't polite about it: it demands to be fed, mutters curses when ignored, and in the older, sharper versions of the tale, her hair itself moves like tentacles to shovel food into it while she sleeps.

The folklore around her varies — some tales frame her as a cursed wife, punished for miserliness or neglect; others make her origin stranger and darker still. What stays consistent is the unease: a second face, concealed, with an appetite and a will of its own.

This design captures her at the moment of the reveal — composed features caught mid-turn, the second mouth just visible through her hair, a blood-red sun behind her and plum blossoms trailing into the frame. Rendered in the same hand-painted, ink-detailed style as the rest of Tales of Old Japan, with antique parchment tones and a circular badge finish.
