When most people picture a shuriken, they're picturing the star-shaped throwing blade — but historically, the bō shuriken was just as common, if not more so. Straight, needle-like spikes rather than spinning stars, these were carried in small sets, concealed easily in clothing, and thrown with a flat, direct trajectory meant to distract, wound, or create an opening rather than serve as a primary weapon.

Bō shuriken weren't really designed to kill outright. Their real value was tactical: a quick throw to the eyes or exposed skin to break an opponent's focus for the half-second a ninja needed to close distance, retreat, or strike with something more decisive. Some schools of shurikenjutsu treated their use as a genuine discipline in its own right, with specific grips, throwing angles, and stances passed down alongside sword and unarmed combat training.
