Edward, the Black Prince, died on 8 June 1376 — a year before his father, and never living to become king himself. He was buried, at his own request, in Canterbury Cathedral, close to the shrine of Thomas Becket. His tomb remains one of the most celebrated monuments of medieval England: a gilt-bronze effigy in full armor, hands folded in prayer, crowned and at peace, resting above a chest carved with his heraldic shields and the Latin inscription marking his death. Above it still hang replicas of his funeral achievements — helm, shield, gauntlets, and surcoat — carried in his funeral procession over six centuries ago.

This design reimagines that tomb as a commemorative roundel — a circular seal in gold and bronze against black, capturing the stillness of the effigy beneath cathedral glass. Where the other pieces in this series show the prince at war and at court, this one shows him at rest — the quiet close to a life spent winning battles from Crécy to Nájera.
