In the spring of 1846, a glowing figure rose from the waves off the coast of Higo Province. Half bird, half fish, with long flowing hair and a beak like a hen's, it identified itself to a local official as Amabie — and delivered a warning: a plague was coming, and would ravage the land for years. But there was a way to survive it. Draw my likeness, the spirit said, and show it to others.

The woodblock print made from that encounter spread across Japan, and Amabie's image became a talisman against sickness — one that resurfaced centuries later, in 2020, when the yōkai found new life online as a symbol of protection during a very different plague.

This design captures Amabie exactly as the old accounts describe her: three-legged, scaled, rising from a churning sea beneath a blood-red sun, hair trailing like seaweed in the current. Rendered in hand-painted ink-wash style with the weathered, antique parchment tones that run through our entire Tales of Old Japan collection, she's framed in a circular badge with her name in both kanji and English beneath her.
