Witches' Night Out – Vintage Gothic Halloween Witch T-Shirt

When the full moon rises, the coven takes to the skies. This vintage gothic design shows a grinning witch soaring on her broomstick, her ragged robes and wild hair streaming behind her, with her black cat perched on the broom. Bats wheel overhead as she sweeps past a haunted castle and an old graveyard on the hill below, all in detailed old-school engraving style and finished with bold red gothic lettering.

The folklore behind the flight

The image of the witch on a broomstick is centuries old. One of the earliest known depictions appears in the margins of a 1451 manuscript of Martin Le Franc's poem Le Champion des Dames, which shows two women riding through the air on a broom and a stick. Over the following centuries, as fear of witchcraft spread across Europe, the flying witch became a fixture of woodcuts, pamphlets and folk tales, travelling by night to secret gatherings.

The black cat has an equally long history at her side. In English witch trials, accused witches were often said to keep "familiars", spirit companions in animal form. In the 1566 Chelmsford trial in Essex, Elizabeth Francis confessed to keeping a white spotted cat she called Sathan, and cats became firmly tied to the witch in the popular imagination.

Halloween itself grew partly from Samhain, the Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest, when the boundary between this world and the next was believed to grow thin. It was a night for spirits, omens and things that fly in the dark, the perfect night for a witch to be out.
