Sailors along Japan's coast have told stories about the Umibōzu for centuries — a massive, dark, faceless or bald-headed figure that rises silently out of calm water, usually right before a storm hits. Some accounts describe it towering over the ship itself, staring without expression, without ever quite explaining what it wants. In most versions, provoking it or trying to fight it seals a vessel's fate; the only real defence is to stay calm, stay quiet, and hope it sinks back beneath the waves on its own.

It's a rarer kind of yōkai in that its danger has almost nothing to do with malice. The Umibōzu doesn't trick, curse, or hunger — it simply appears, and the sea around it turns violent. Some scholars connect the legend to sailors' genuine fear of sudden ocean squalls, given a shape large and inexplicable enough to match the terror of watching calm water turn on you without warning.
