Among Japan's yōkai, few carry as much sorrow as the Ubume — the spirit of a woman who died in childbirth, or shortly after, still holding the child she never got to raise. She appears at roadsides and riverbanks after dark, cradling her baby, sometimes asking passersby to hold it for just a moment while she steps away.

Depending on the telling, what happens next varies. In some versions, the bundle grows impossibly heavy in the stranger's arms, echoing other "weighted" yōkai encounters. In gentler tellings, she's simply seeking help finishing something death interrupted — a last act of care for a child she couldn't finish raising herself. Unlike more overtly frightening yōkai, the Ubume's story tends to land less as horror and more as grief given a shape that refuses to fully leave.

This design keeps her quiet and composed — head bowed over the swaddled child in her arms, hair moving like it still carries weight, a pagoda and dead tree behind her beneath a deep red sun.
