The Tsuchigumo — literally "ground spider" — is one of the oldest monster archetypes in Japanese storytelling, a massive spider with a human-like face said to lair in caves and ruins, weaving webs strong enough to trap grown warriors. Its most famous appearance comes from the legend of Minamoto no Yorimitsu, the same hero credited with slaying Shuten-dōji, who battled a Tsuchigumo after finding a trail of bones leading to its underground lair.

Unlike a lot of yōkai defined by mischief or trickery, the Tsuchigumo has always carried a heavier, more overtly monstrous weight — closer to a dragon or ogre in a Western sense, something meant to be fought and defeated rather than negotiated with or outwitted. That older, harder edge is part of what's kept the legend in circulation across centuries of retellings, woodblock prints, and Noh theatre.

This design leans fully into scale and menace — a crowned, half-human face emerging from a hulking, spider-limbed body, framed against a deep red sun with mountains and pine forest behind it. Heavier, more textured shading than most of the collection, closer to a creature-feature illustration than a folklore plate.
