The Winter Coven: Three Witches Cauldron T-Shirt

On the longest nights of the year, three old crones gather round a frozen cauldron. Icicles hang from their hat brims, candles gutter in the snow, and a pair of ravens keep watch from the branches above. One stirs, one sprinkles the last of the autumn's berries into the brew, and one reads the future in a crystal ball while a black cat looks on. The Winter Coven is a richly detailed folk-horror illustration for anyone who likes their winter with a little more darkness than tinsel.

The folklore behind the design

Three witches around a cauldron is one of the oldest images in British storytelling. Shakespeare's Weird Sisters meet Macbeth on a Scottish heath around 1606, and their incantation, "Double, double toil and trouble; fire burn and cauldron bubble," has shaped how we picture witches ever since. Shakespeare took them from Holinshed's Chronicles, and behind them stand older ideas of three women who spin fate, such as the Norns of Norse myth.

The winter setting draws on the Cailleach Bheur, the Gaelic hag of winter in Scottish and Irish folklore. She is said to rule the dark half of the year from Samhain to spring. Storms are her doing, and the first snows on the mountains are her plaid, washed white in the whirlpool of Corryvreckan. She is the crone in her oldest form: ancient, weather-worn and not to be crossed.

Ravens have long been creatures of omen and prophecy in both Celtic and Norse tradition. Together with the candles, skulls and spell books, they turn this cauldron scene into a proper midwinter gathering.
