On the evening of March 13, 1997, a massive V-shaped formation of lights passed silently over Phoenix, Arizona, witnessed by thousands of people across the state, from private citizens to police officers to the state's own governor. Some described a single enormous, silent object carrying the lights, easily a mile wide by several accounts, moving slowly and deliberately across the sky before disappearing from view entirely.

The most widely accepted explanation attributes a later, separate set of lights that night to flares dropped during a military exercise, but this doesn't account for the earlier, larger V-formation reported by the bulk of witnesses, and no explanation has ever fully satisfied everyone who saw it. With its sheer number of credible, simultaneous witnesses across an entire metropolitan area, the Phoenix Lights remain one of the most significant mass sighting events in modern UFO history, still actively debated decades later.
