Every neighbourhood has a gang. This one works bin day.

Six feathered troublemakers have claimed an overflowing wheelie bin as their own, and every one of them is dressed for the occasion:

• A glossy crow in round gold shades makes off with a dripping slice of pizza.
• A magpie in a teal bobble hat has a chip in its beak.
• A pigeon in a backwards red cap perches front and centre like it owns the place.
• A shouting seagull in a bucket hat stands on top of the pile.
• A cockatoo in red sunglasses shows off its crest.
• A robin in a little trilby chomps a chip of its own.

Below them the bin spills over with banana peels, crushed cans, crisp packets, pizza boxes and a stray apple core, with a bin bag and a tyre stuffed round the back.

Drawn in a detailed, gritty cartoon style with a distressed vintage finish, it's a design for anyone whose friend group is a little bit feral.

Real-life bin raiders

This squad isn't far from the truth. In the suburbs of Sydney, researchers documented sulphur-crested cockatoos learning to lift the lids of wheelie bins to get at the food inside. The trick spread from neighbourhood to neighbourhood as birds copied one another, a rare example of animal culture spreading in real time. Closer to home, crows, magpies, gulls and pigeons are some of Britain's most adaptable urban birds, and anyone who's eaten chips at the seaside knows exactly how bold they can be.
