High in Japan's forested mountains live the Tengu — winged, long-nosed spirits with a reputation that's shifted dramatically over centuries. Early Buddhist texts painted them as dangerous, arrogant demons, capable of leading monks astray and punishing the prideful. Over time, that image softened into something closer to fierce protector: skilled warriors and martial arts masters who guard sacred peaks, occasionally training worthy humans in swordsmanship and discipline.

Their most identifiable trait — the long, exaggerated nose — became such a strong visual shorthand that it's still used today in Japan as an expression for someone being boastful or full of themselves. Fitting, for a spirit whose whole mythology is built around the tension between pride and wisdom, arrogance and mastery.

This design renders an elder Tengu in full ceremonial dress, feathered wings spread, prayer beads and a hauchiwa fan in hand, mountain pines behind him. More muted, earthy colour work than some of the collection's redder pieces, closer to a mountain hermit's portrait than a monster illustration.

For anyone drawn to the guardian side of Japanese folklore — fierce, proud, and not entirely human.
