Spooky Season: Grim Reaper Graveyard Halloween T-Shirt

It's that time of year again, and someone has clearly been looking forward to it. Draped in cobwebbed rags and grinning from ear to ear, the Grim Reaper leans over a crumbling churchyard wall and reaches out with long bony fingers. A black cat arches and hisses beside him, three jack-o'-lanterns glare from the fallen leaves, and up on the hill a haunted house glows under the full moon while bats circle overhead. Dripping, cobwebbed lettering says what everyone's thinking: Spooky Season. It's a classic vintage-style Halloween illustration packed with every favourite of the season.

The folklore behind the design

The skeletal Grim Reaper as we know him took shape in 14th-century Europe, in the years of the Black Death. As the plague swept the continent from the 1340s, Death began to appear in art as a skeleton or cloaked corpse carrying a scythe, cutting people down like a harvest. Painters and carvers also showed the Danse Macabre, where Death leads kings, bishops and peasants alike in a dance to the grave, a reminder that no one is spared.

Many old English churchyards are entered through a lychgate, a small roofed gateway where a coffin would rest before the funeral service. The name comes from the Old English līc, meaning corpse. The word "spooky" is much newer. It comes from the Dutch spook, meaning ghost, which entered American English in the early 1800s. By the 20th century "spooky season" had become the unofficial name for everyone's favourite time of year.
