In July 1947, wreckage was recovered from a ranch outside Roswell, New Mexico, and for one day, the local press ran a headline claiming the Air Force had captured a "flying disc." Within twenty-four hours, the story changed: officials announced it was simply a weather balloon, and the case was closed. It's been reopening in the public imagination ever since.

Decades later, the U.S. Air Force revised its explanation again, attributing the debris to a classified surveillance balloon from Project Mogul, built to monitor Soviet nuclear tests. That's the official record. It's also, for a lot of people, exactly the kind of shifting explanation that turns a strange story into a permanent one, and Roswell has remained the single most famous UFO incident in the world regardless of which balloon story you're being told this decade.
