Horned, red-skinned, fanged, and enormous — the Oni is probably the single most recognisable figure to come out of Japanese folklore, and one of the oldest. Long before it settled into the horned-demon image most people know today, "oni" referred more broadly to unseen, malevolent forces — misfortune, disease, disaster given a shape and a name so people had something to guard against.

Over centuries the Oni became more literal: a hulking, club-wielding demon associated with the underworld, punishment, and raw destructive strength. But it's also one of the few yōkai woven directly into living tradition rather than just old stories — every February, households across Japan throw roasted soybeans and shout "oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi" (demons out, fortune in) during Setsubun, a ritual specifically built around driving Oni from the home. Genuinely feared and genuinely ritualised, in a way most yōkai never quite reach.

This design goes straight for the mask — full-colour, high-contrast, horns cutting into the frame, kanji for "oni" set into the forehead like a brand. Bolder and more graphic than most of the collection's ink-wash pieces, built to read strongly even at a distance.
