Some folklore traditions name him the supreme commander of all yōkai — the figure who leads the Hyakki Yagyō, the legendary "Night Parade of a Hundred Demons," through the streets of sleeping towns. Others describe something smaller and stranger: an old man who slips into a stranger's house uninvited, settles in as if he owns the place, drinks their tea, and leaves before anyone quite works out what happened or who let him in.

That contradiction is part of what makes Nurarihyon so hard to pin down — he isn't monstrous or violent so much as unnervingly confident, moving through human spaces with a calm that suggests he's never once considered that he might not belong. His elongated head and pleasant, faintly mocking smile have become one of the more recognisable images in yōkai folklore, precisely because he looks less like a threat and more like someone getting away with something.
