Makibishi Ninja Caltrops T-Shirt | Japanese Weapon Tee

Not every ninja tool was about attacking — some were built entirely around getting away. Makibishi were small, spiked devices scattered across the ground behind a fleeing ninja, designed so at least one point always faced upward no matter how they landed. Anyone giving chase, whether on foot or on horseback, would find the ground itself suddenly working against them.

Simple in concept but genuinely effective in practice, makibishi turned a straightforward footrace into a hazard the pursuer had to slow down and navigate carefully. Some versions were forged from iron for lasting sharpness, while cruder field versions were made from dried water-chestnut husks, naturally spiked and disposable. Either way, the goal was the same: buy seconds, and seconds were often all an infiltrator needed.

This design captures the exact moment of the scatter — a hooded figure sprinting through a narrow street, caltrops thrown behind him and already littering the ground, torch-bearing pursuers visible in the distance under a full moon. Same dense engraved woodcut style as the rest of the ninja weapons pieces, with the caltrops picked out in warm gold against the black-and-white linework.
