The kunai is probably the single most recognisable piece of ninja equipment in modern pop culture — but its real history is a lot less glamorous than the thrown weapon it's often portrayed as. Originally, the kunai was closer to a working tool than a blade meant for combat: a thick, pointed implement used for digging into masonry, prying apart wooden panels, chiselling footholds into a wall, or scratching handholds into stone during a climb.

That's not to say it had no place in a fight. In close quarters, its short, sturdy blade made it a viable last-resort weapon when a sword wasn't practical or available — but its everyday value was as a piece of field equipment, the kind of tool a shinobi carried because infiltration work involved as much quiet manual labour as it did stealth or combat.

This design catches a hooded figure mid-task, kunai driven into castle stonework, moonlit rooftops visible behind him. Same dense engraved woodcut style as the rest of the ninja weapons pieces, with the blade picked out in deep red against the black-and-white linework.
