The oldest and strongest are said to be nearly divine, tied closely to Inari, the deity of rice, prosperity, and harvest, and treated in many regions as messengers rather than monsters.

But Kitsune folklore has always held two sides at once. Some foxes are loyal guardians, capable of great devotion, even falling in love and living among humans as faithful companions. Others are pure trickery — shapeshifters who take human form to deceive travelers, lead them astray on forest paths, or simply enjoy the game of illusion for its own sake.
