If the ashiko let a ninja grip a wall with their feet, the kaginawa was often what got them up there in the first place. A weighted, multi-pronged hook attached to a length of rope, the kaginawa could be thrown up and over a wall, gate, or rooftop edge, then used to haul a climber up in a fraction of the time it would take by hand alone — or thrown across a gap to bridge two rooftops entirely.

Its uses went beyond climbing. Some accounts describe kaginawa repurposed as improvised weapons, used to snag an opponent's weapon or limb mid-fight, or even to drag someone off balance from a distance. Versatile, compact, and easy to conceal under clothing, it's one of the clearest examples of ninja equipment built to solve more than one problem with a single tool.

This design captures the moment of ascent itself — a hooded figure mid-climb up a castle wall, hook already anchored above, full moon and rooftops behind. Same dense engraved woodcut style as the rest of the ninja weapons pieces, with the rope and hook picked out in a muted teal against the black-and-white linework.
