Not every yōkai chases, curses, or hungers. Some simply watch. The Hyakume — literally "hundred eyes" — is a humanoid creature covered head to foot in staring, unblinking eyes, said to lurk in old temples and forgotten storehouses. Folklore treats it less as a monster to fear and more as a guardian of sorts, a warning against theft: touch anything belonging to a Hyakume, and one of its countless eyes will follow you home.

It's one of the stranger entries in the yōkai catalogue precisely because it doesn't do very much — it just sees. There's something quietly unsettling about a creature whose entire nature is surveillance, standing silent in the dark long after everyone else has gone to sleep.

This design renders the Hyakume at full height, every inch of its towering, sinewy form packed with eyes of different sizes, standing beneath a blood-red sun with a lone pine and distant mountains behind it. Heavier, more textured ink work here than in the rest of the collection, leaning into body-horror territory rather than the ghost-story elegance of some of the other designs.
