Howdy Stranger: Evil Jack-o'-Lantern Halloween T-Shirt

Out on a lonely road on Halloween night, a friendly greeting is the last thing you want to hear. This pumpkin has been waiting. Sprawled in a nest of twisting vines and fallen leaves, its jagged grin glowing with fire and its eyes burning, it gives you a welcome that sends a chill down your spine: Howdy Stranger. Behind it a pale full moon rises, and bats flit through the night air. It's a bold, vintage-horror Halloween illustration for anyone who loves spooky season with a touch of Wild West menace.

The folklore behind the design

The name "jack-o'-lantern" is older than the carved pumpkin. In 17th-century England it meant a night watchman, or simply "Jack with the lantern," and soon it was also used for the will-o'-the-wisp: the eerie flickering lights seen over marshes at night, which were said to lead travellers off the path and into the bog.

Carved lanterns came later, and in Britain and Ireland they were first made from turnips and mangelwurzels. In the Somerset village of Hinton St George, children still celebrate Punkie Night on the last Thursday of October, carrying hollowed-out mangelwurzel lanterns through the streets and singing the traditional punkie song.

The pumpkin itself is a native of the Americas. When the lantern custom crossed the Atlantic, settlers found it far bigger and easier to carve than a turnip, and the grinning pumpkin face was born. So this stranger may be American, but its roots run straight back to the fields of Britain and Ireland.
