She comes to lonely men at night — beautiful, gentle, devoted. Only to the man himself does she look untouched by death; to anyone else who happens to glimpse her, she's exactly what she is beneath the kimono: a walking skeleton, wrapped in the memory of a woman's love.

The Hone-onna's story is usually a tragedy dressed as a haunting. In the most repeated version, she's the spirit of a woman who died still loving a man who moved on — returning not to harm him out of malice, but because grief doesn't know it's supposed to stop. He wastes away in her company, drained a little more each night, and dies still believing he was loved by someone living.

This design sits her at rest, kimono pooling around bone, hair moving like it still has weight, a red sun and plum blossoms behind her. Rendered in looser, more expressive brushwork than some of the collection's tighter pieces, with hand-lettered title text underneath for a slightly rawer, folk-horror feel.

For anyone drawn to the sadder, more human side of Japan's ghost stories — where the monster is really just grief that never got to let go.
