Help Me Mummy: Funny Horror Mummy Halloween T-Shirt

Three thousand years in a tomb will make anyone cranky. This one has finally clawed his way out: bandages trailing, eyes blazing red, jaw wide open in a scream that's been waiting centuries. Behind him a pyramid and ruined temple stand against a blood-red moon, bats wheel through the night, and in dripping horror lettering comes the plea every child has shouted at some point: Help Me Mummy! It's a bold, retro horror-poster illustration with a pun at its heart, for anyone who likes their Halloween scary and silly at the same time.

The folklore behind the design

Britain has had a strange relationship with mummies for a very long time. For centuries, ground-up Egyptian mummy, sold as "mumia," was stocked by European apothecaries as a medicine. Later it was mixed into a paint pigment called "mummy brown," which artists used well into the 19th century. In the 1830s, the London surgeon Thomas Pettigrew, nicknamed "Mummy Pettigrew," drew paying crowds to public mummy "unrollings," where he unwrapped the bodies in front of an audience.

The idea of a mummy's curse took hold in 1922, after Howard Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb. When the expedition's sponsor, Lord Carnarvon, died the following spring from an infected mosquito bite, newspapers ran wild with stories of an ancient curse striking down those who disturbed the pharaoh. Most of the team lived long lives, but the legend has never gone back in its box.

The word itself comes from the Persian mūm, meaning wax, via the Arabic mūmiyā, the bitumen once thought to preserve the bodies. So when you shout for your mummy, be careful which one answers.
