Haunted House: Vintage Halloween Jack-o'-Lantern T-Shirt

The gate is open. The lights are on. And somebody, or something, is standing in the upstairs window, waiting. This crooked old Victorian mansion looms beneath a huge full moon, its turrets black against the sky and every window glowing orange. Bats circle the chimneys, two black cats with burning red eyes stand guard on the gateposts, and three grinning jack-o'-lanterns light the way up the leaf-strewn steps. Dripping, cobwebbed lettering spells out the invitation: Haunted House. It's a classic vintage-style Halloween illustration for anyone who's ever dared to knock.

The folklore behind the design

People have told stories about haunted houses for almost two thousand years. Around AD 100, the Roman writer Pliny the Younger described a house in Athens that nobody would live in, because at night a pale old man in chains appeared and rattled his fetters. A philosopher named Athenodorus rented it cheaply, followed the ghost to a spot in the courtyard, and had it dug up. There they found a skeleton bound in chains. Once it was given a proper burial, the haunting stopped.

Britain has its own famous example. Borley Rectory in Essex was once called "the most haunted house in England," after decades of reported phantom footsteps, ringing bells and a ghostly nun in the grounds. It burned down in 1939, but its legend lives on.

The jack-o'-lanterns come from Ireland and Britain, where the old Halloween lanterns were carved from turnips and mangelwurzels. Irish legend tells of Stingy Jack, a man who tricked the Devil and was left to wander the dark forever with only a coal in a hollowed turnip to light his way. When the custom crossed the Atlantic, the pumpkin, bigger and easier to carve, took over.
