The folklore behind the design

In the folklore of northern Europe, the little old man in the red cap is not always as friendly as the garden version. The Scandinavian tomte or nisse, the ancestor of the modern Christmas gnome, was a small, bearded guardian of the farmstead. On Christmas Eve he expected a bowl of porridge with a knob of butter on top. Forget the butter, and he could turn spiteful: tangling the horses' manes, souring the milk or worse.

Older still are the gnomes described by the 16th-century physician Paracelsus: earth spirits who lived underground and guarded its hidden treasures. German miners told similar tales of kobolds haunting the mines. They blamed them for a troublesome ore that gave off poisonous fumes when smelted, and named it after them. We still call it cobalt.
