Go No Further Tee — Gothic Gnome & Ravens Christmas T-Shirt

Not everyone who meets the fair folk gets an invitation. This one has had enough visitors. Crouched before an ancient carved standing stone in the deep midwinter snow, this ice-crusted old gnome grips his staff, raises his lantern and holds up a warning scrawled on splintered wood: Go No Further. The ravens are already watching, and the bones in the snow suggest some travellers didn't take the hint. It's the grim counterpart to our designs Come Closer and Come Friend: a richly detailed dark-fantasy illustration for anyone who knows when to turn back, or enjoys pretending they wouldn't.

The folklore behind the design

Britain's ancient standing stones have always attracted warnings. At the Rollright Stones on the Oxfordshire–Warwickshire border, legend says a king and his men were turned to stone by a witch. The circle is supposedly impossible to count the same way twice, and anyone who tries to carry a stone away is said to suffer bad luck until it's returned. At stones and circles across the country, the same kind of story repeats: disturb this place and something will make you regret it.

Boundaries mattered too. For centuries English parishes marked their limits with stones and posts, and every year villagers "beat the bounds," walking the edge of the parish and striking the markers with sticks so that everyone, young and old, knew exactly where the line ran. Gnomes, in turn, were described by the 16th-century physician Paracelsus as earth spirits who guarded what lay beneath the ground. Put an old stone, a boundary and a guardian together, and the message is clear.
