Chill Mode On: Grumpy Gnome Puddle T-Shirt

He's sitting in a puddle. His socks are soaked. It's still raining. And he's decided he doesn't care. This old gnome has leant back against his barrel, mug in hand and muddy boots up, and switched off completely, while a fairy and a pixie get up to no good around him. The folklore behind the design

The red-and-white toadstools around him are fly agaric, the classic fairy-tale mushroom. The name is centuries old. Its use to kill flies was described by the 13th-century scholar Albertus Magnus, and for generations country people broke it into saucers of milk to poison flies. It's toxic, so it belongs on the shirt and not on the plate.

Mushrooms have long had a place in British fairy lore. Rings of toadstools in a field or wood were known as fairy rings and were said to mark where the fair folk had danced at night. Stepping inside one was thought to be risky: you might be pulled into the dance, or lose years of your life that felt like one night. Gnomes go back to the 16th-century physician Paracelsus, who described them as small earth spirits at home deep in the soil. On a day like this, this one is at home in the mud as well.
