On the night of February 24, 1942, just weeks after Pearl Harbor, air raid sirens tore through Los Angeles and anti-aircraft crews opened fire into the dark sky. Over the next hour, roughly 1,400 shells were fired at what defenders believed were enemy aircraft overhead. No bombs fell. No wreckage was ever found. No enemy plane was ever confirmed.

What actually happened that night has never been fully settled. The Navy initially called it a false alarm brought on by war nerves; the Army suggested unidentified aircraft, possibly civilian, may have triggered the response. Some later theories point to drifting weather balloons mistaken for the real thing in the panic of the moment. What's certain is that thousands of Angelenos watched searchlights crisscross the sky over their city that night, chasing something nobody could quite identify — and that gap in the official story is exactly what's kept the incident alive in UFO folklore for over eighty years.

This design places the viewer on a rooftop with the gun crews, searchlight beams crossing directly overhead against a starlit sky, downtown Los Angeles lit up below. Rendered in weathered indigo and cream, styled like a genuine wartime engraving pulled from the archive.
