Long before dream-catchers, Japan had the Baku — a chimeric creature stitched together from the parts of other beasts: the trunk and tusks of an elephant, the mane and body of a lion or bear, the tail of an ox, the eyes of a rhinoceros. Ask a Baku for help, the old stories say, and it will step into your sleep and swallow the nightmare whole, leaving nothing behind but calm.

It's an old piece of folk protection — children in Edo-period Japan were taught a short phrase to recite to the Baku after waking from a bad dream, calling on it to eat what had frightened them. But the same stories carry a warning too: summon a Baku too often, with nothing troubling you, and it may eat your hopes and ambitions along with your nightmares. Even benevolent spirits come with fine print.

This design renders the Baku as the old woodblock prints do — part-elephant, part-beast, gilded cloud markings curling across its flank, prowling beneath a heavy red sun. Ink-wash textures and weathered parchment tones tie it to the rest of the Tales of Old Japan collection, for anyone who wants their nightmares handled by something a little stranger than a dream-catcher.
